ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

70% Street Signs and Traffic Signals

  • Install, maintain, and repair all new and existing traffic signal equipment, including controllers and associated electrical wiring, vehicle loops, vehicle detection amplifiers, pedestrian push buttons, and walk/don’t crosswalk heads.
  • Program electronic controllers.
  • Modify or upgrade control cabinets.
  • Maintain and repair standby electronic controllers.
  • Install conduits, wires, pull boxes, switchboards, and handholds.
  • Prepare phasing, sequence, and wiring diagrams for intersections.
  • Maintain and repair traffic and school zone lights, electric and solar.
  • Operate motor vehicle on a regular basis.
  • Perform sign and signal maintenance using an aerial lift and/or platform.
  • Create signage using Trafftech ETS PRO software.
  • Install street and traffic signage as per MUTCD.
  • Manage signage inventory and replacement schedule.
  • Perform data entry as required to maintain sign and signal inventory and replacement schedule.
  • Order supplies and materials necessary to complete planned work.

20% Facilities and Equipment

  • Maintain all division equipment in a good and working order.
  • Troubleshoot problems with division equipment and facilities.
  • Perform minor electrical work to maintain public equipment and facilities.
  • Organize and maintain the division facilities in a clean and safe condition.
  • Clear and remove snow and ice from city streets and/or facilities as assigned.

 

10% Administration and Supervision

  • Prepare and maintain traffic signal and maintenance records in an organized manner.
  • Maintain an inventory of signs, traffic and school zone lights, and traffic control devices.
  • Supervise subordinate staff as required.
  • Coordinate work assignments.
  • Provide recommendations regarding individual performance expectations and monitor and evaluate employee performance through formal and informal performance reviews according to policy.
  • Provide recommendations regarding employment-related decisions involving hiring, discipline, and all other status changes.

Continually looks for new and improved ways of completing the above functions.  Other tasks as assigned will be performed in order to address business needs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS      

Latitude:  Most duties are defined and consistent from day to day.  Problem solving requiring is accomplished in conjunction with supervisor.  Some decisions not affecting other departments may be made independently.  All purchase requests must be approved by supervisor.  Regular and reliable attendance at work is expected.

Interaction:  Frequent interaction with employees throughout the organization and the general public.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Vocational training in electronics preferred.
  • One-year electrical experience, preferred.
  • One year traffic signalization experience, preferred.
  • Valid Kansas driver’s license and driving record must meet commercial liability insurance requirements.
  • Valid Kansas commercial driver’s license, required within 6 month of employment or as training becomes available.
  • IMSA Work Zone certification, required.
  • IMSA level II Traffic Signalization certification, required.
  • IMSA Level I Signs and Markings certification, required.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200 and 700 certifications required within 12 months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of electrical and electronic systems.
  • Ability to apply intermediate level mathematics skills.
  • Ability to operate all division equipment.
  • Ability to read and use blueprints.
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public and communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing.

Environmental Conditions/Physical Requirements:  Frequent (75%) exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous elements, and dangerous situations.  Regular (40%) carrying, lifting, moving, or pushing of 50 pounds.  Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and twisting.  Must be available for on-call and overtime.
