City of Great Bend
Located in the center of Kansas, the City of Great Bend is the largest town and the county seat of Barton County. With a population of approximately 15,000, Great Bend is the retail, service, medical and entertainment hub for several surrounding Kansas Counties and communities. The City looks forward to continued growth through projects, new housing, economic development and the enhancement of various public green spaces.
Best known for our location by Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, the Wetlands give us a place in the Central Migratory Flyway. People travel from all over the country to see bird migrations, hunt and enjoy nature. In addition, there are numerous other attractions and activities for the entire family. Great Bend is home to the Historic SRCA Dragstrip with races from April to October, the Wetlands Waterpark, and our free, Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo, the Barton County Fair, the Santa Fe Trail, numerous small lakes and the newly paved Hike & Bike Path. Annual festivals include the Downtown Art & Wine Walk, June Jaunt, Party in the Park and each Christmas the town turns into a Christmas City with the Home for the Holidays Festival & Parade, iceless skating rink, Trail of Lights through town, and Santa’s Around the World.
Great Bend is an excellent place to raise a family in a quiet, relaxed environment. The community offers several outstanding schools, both public and private. Our middle school and high school have both been remodeled and expanded. Great Bend is also home to Barton Community College for anyone interested in higher education. Homes are both affordable and available.
