Position Summary

Under supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, this position is training for the responsibility of the operation and maintenance of the City Wastewater Treatment Plant and the City Wastewater Collection System, including the outlying lift stations. Duties are performed under direct supervision until such time that assigned work can be done independently.

Essential Functions

  • Checks, monitors and lubricates operating equipment and performs maintenance as required at the Wastewater Treatment Plant;
  • Collects samples of wastewater/sludge and performs standard tests to evaluate the treatment process and maintains related records;
  • Operates the Wastewater Plant, occasionally independently on weekends and holidays, including making decisions regarding aeration rates, sludge hauling and wasting rates;
  • Loads and transports sludge to agricultural locations and then land-applies the sludge;
  • Performs daily inspections and preventive equipment maintenance at the outlying lift stations;
  • Operates trucks, rodding and water jetting machines and other transportation equipment in the maintenance of the City Wastewater Collection System;
  • Assists in constructing and repairing sewer lines and appurtenances.
  • Locates and marks underground sewer lines for other excavators.
  • Provides stand-by on weekends and holidays

Marginal Functions

  • Assists with supply inventory, filing and record-keeping;
  • Performs routine custodial and building maintenance tasks such as painting, scraping, washing, mowing grass, pulling weeds and shoveling snow;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Position Requirements 

Experience:   Public utility maintenance experience desirable.

Education/Licenses:  Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. required. Must obtain a State of Kansas Class I Wastewater Operator Certification within 2 years of employment.  Possession of a Kansas Commercial Driver’s License within 30 days.

Technical Skills: Mechanical aptitude and ability to utilize power tools and equipment needed.   

Problem Solving: Ability to recognize machinery malfunctions, assemble and install sewer lines and their appurtenances needed.

Decision-Making: Limited decision making as part of the working group, however, when isolated on weekends, must be able to decide when additional help is necessary.

Supervision:   Receives direct supervision from the Wastewater Supervisor. This position is not responsible for supervising others.

Accountability: Responsible for the City tools and equipment used in this department.

Personal Relations: Occasional contact with the general public. Must be able to tactfully answer questions or direct questions to upper management from the general public. Must be able to work well with co-workers.

Working Conditions: Stationed at the Wastewater Plant, outside work maintaining collection system around open trenches, construction equipment and occasionally vehicular traffic in all weather conditions.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform various appurtenance manipulation, lifting in excess of 100 lbs, power tool use, climbing in and out of holes and truck driving and material dumping.
