MUNICIPAL COURT INTERPRETER
Distinguishing features of the class: The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide Spanish language interpretation that translation services to the non-English speaking public during Municipal Court proceedings. Municipal Court Interpreters are responsible for the interpretation of court proceedings and the translation of court-related documents. Interpreters work under the direct supervision of the Municipal Court Judge, who evaluates work based on the quality of service provided and the results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Provides verbal Spanish interpretation and translation services in a variety of court settings;
• Provides interpretation of testimony, questions and responses during legal proceedings;
• Translates written documents, including existing court forms and other related court documents and materials, as assigned.
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround time, streamline work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer care.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF:
• The Spanish language with demonstrated proficiency in proper regional and idiomatic usage.
• Techniques of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and translation.
• Legal terminology and procedures of the court system.
ABILITY TO:
• Work cooperatively with City employees, defendants and the public.
• Learn job-related material primarily through oral instructions and observation. This learning takes place in an on-the-job training setting.
• Provide Spanish translation of existing court forms and other related court documents and materials.
• Provide simultaneous or consecutive interpretation of testimony, questions, and responses during legal proceedings.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
• One year of experience providing interpreting services in a public setting is preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS:
• Courtroom environment; exposure to computer screens; working in close proximity to other people.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
• Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
