Job Description:

  • POSITION SUMMARY *

_ _ Under the direction of the Infrastructure Manager, the Equipment Operator is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position assists with the maintenance of City streets by operating departmental equipment, and assists with manual labor and maintenance of other departments. This employee should possess mechanical and communication skills. All Levels of experience and certification are encouraged to apply with pay rate matched to corresponding title.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

  • Performs street maintenance and repairs;
  • Assists with road construction projects;
  • Operates heavy equipment;
  • Cleans and maintains ditches;
  • Performs building and grounds maintenance;
  • Maintains and repairs equipment and machinery;
  • Minimal supervision of seasonal or part-time employees is required.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists other departments as the need arises;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

_ POSITION REQUIREMENTS-ALL LEVELS _

TECHNICAL SKILLS: Must have a general knowledge of mechanics, wastewater testing equipment, wastewater collections maintenance and operation, wastewater treatment, minor electrical work, and computers with that ability to operate and comprehend Microsoft Office products, and SCADA systems.

Ability to use laboratory equipment, understand the results of tests and be able to perform adjustments as required. Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work environments, performing a variety of frequently changing tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, heavy machinery, excessive noise, heights, and work in confined spaces is expected. Occasional nights/weekend hours may be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the ability to operate heavy machinery is required daily in this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

_EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I - (Salary Range: $15.86 to $23.78 / hour) _
_ _EXPERIENCE: One to two years of previous experience operating and maintaining construction equipment, technical and practical knowledge of street repair and maintenance is preferred.

EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required. A valid Class A commercial driver’s license, with air brakes, or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment is preferred. A valid Class A commercial driver’s license with a tanker endorsement and air brakes is preferred.
Tactful verbal and written communications skills are required.

_EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 2- (Salary Range: $18.09 to $27.14 / hour) _
_ _EXPERIENCE: Three years of previous experience operating and maintaining construction equipment, technical and practical knowledge of street repair and maintenance is required.

EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required. A valid Class A commercial driver’s license, with tanker endorsement and air brakes, or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment is preferred.
Tactful verbal and written communications skills are required.

Must have a minimum Class 1 Water or Wastewater Certification from KDHE and obtain a class 2 Water or Wastewater Certification within two (2) years of employment. Must maintain the license by continuously meeting renewal requirements as required by KDHE.

_EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 3 - (Salary Range: $20.64 to $30.96 / hour) _
_ _EXPERIENCE: Four years of previous experience operating and maintaining construction equipment, technical and practical knowledge of street repair and maintenance is preferred.

EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required. A valid Class A commercial driver’s license, with tanker endorsement and air brakes, or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment is preferred.
Tactful verbal and written communications skills are required.

Must have a minimum Class 2 Water or Wastewater Certification from KDHE and obtain a class 3 Water or Wastewater Certification within two (2) years of employment. Must maintain the license by continuously meeting renewal requirements as required by KDHE. EEO Employer
