Part Time Bus Driver - City of Liberal

The Bus Driver operates vehicles in the City of Liberal Public Transportation System in a polite and courteous manner. The vehicles, owned and operated by the City, include normal sized vans and buses that seat up to 12 passengers. The position will ensure the transport and safety of all passengers utilizing the public transportation system. This position will ensure that all state and local transportation rules and regulations are followed relating to the transporting of passengers. This position reports to the Transit Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Inspects vehicles, including gas, oil and water level prior to shift departure and after shift return
  • Make pick-ups and deliveries as routed by the dispatcher
  • Operate all vehicles in a safe and careful manner with full regard to traffic and the use of the roadway by others
  • Announces stops to passengers
  • Park vehicles in designated loading and unloading areas for passenger transfer
  • Ensure passengers pay correct fees for transportation
  • Report delays, accident, or disruptive rides to dispatch or management
  • Advise riders to be seated and orderly while riding in the vehicle
  • Regulate heating, lighting and ventilating systems for passenger comfort
  • Strictly observe all traffic rules and other applicable laws and regulations at all times
  • Keep vehicles locked when unattended
  • Adhere to regulation when riders using wheelchairs are boarding or exiting
  • Updates mileage, usage, transportation, vehicle and other related reports and records
  • Inspects vehicles to ensure compliance with all safety standards
  • Promote a safe work environment by attending and/or conducting safety related meetings
  • Demonstrates continuous efforts to improve operations decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.
  • Other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • City of Liberal geographic layout
  • Transportation of the elderly, disabled and others with special needs
  • Vehicle service methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service, including customer needs assessment and the evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Organization and time-management skills.

Ability to:

  • Provide exceptional customer service to the general public and passengers
  • Physically able to safety operate vehicles provided in the City of Liberal Public Transportation System (Vans for special need customers and large 12 passenger Buses)
  • Ability to follow Federal, state and local guidelines, regulations and programs related to the transportation system
  • Assist customers in wheelchairs Customers who physically need help getting in and out of the Bus or Van
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. occasionally
  • Must be able to push up to 50 lbs. frequently
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs. regularly
  • Work cooperatively with City employees, clients and the public
  • Observe or monitor objects, data and people’s behavior to determine the compliance with operating and safety standards

REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires the use of a city vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and possess a valid and insurable driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.
  •  In addition, individual is required to pass a pre-employment drug-screening test. This position is also subject to the City of Liberal’s’ Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following:  post-accident testing, Reasonable suspicion testing, and follow-up testing.
  • Individual must pass a KDOT physical exam
  •  Employee will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

EXPERIENCE:

 High School Diploma. Knowledge of state and local traffic regulations. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
