Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician

Pay Range: (Step 1) $21.02- (Step 15) $29.71

The City of Maize Public Works Department is seeking a skilled full-time GIS Technician. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the City’s GIS, including water, sanitary sewer, streets, sidewalks, cemetery, and zoning maps. This person will be expected to collect and verify infrastructure data in the field as well as obtain data from outside firms. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems, and posses the ability to decipher engineering drawings.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for data collection, data input, and management of the City’s GIS and asset management/work order system
  • Review and approve building permit applications
  • Assist Planning in addressing new developments
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining boundary, zoning, addressing, and utility infrastructure maps
  • Operates and maintains GIS related equipment - plotters, scanners, tablets, iPads, and various computer terminals and workstations
  • Provide GIS support for all City operations
  • Attend various meetings as deemed necessary
  • Promote the goodwill of the City
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
Skills:
  • Demonstrates proficiency in ESRI GIS software including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Apps Field Maps, Survey123, ArcGIS for Excel  
  • Ability to operate GPS equipment and related programs
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD .dwg files associated with CAD (computer-aided design) programs
  • Demonstrates close attention to detail
  • Ability to collect spatial data in the field
  • Ability to read engineering drawings
  • Working knowledge of surveying, and engineering practices
  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of, Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe PDF, and Windows File Explorer
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance
  • Ability to possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver’s License
Education:
  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Degree in GIS, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred
Experience:
  • Previous experience in a GIS-related role strongly preferred
