POSITION SUMMARY                                                                                                                                 

Under the supervision of the Street Superintendent and Crew Leader, the Equipment Operator I is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee operates and maintains department equipment, assists with maintenance and repairs to city streets, alleys, and storm sewer collection systems. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and effective communication and public relation skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs a wide variety of manual, skilled, and semi-skilled construction and maintenance work, including digging trenches, placing and finishing concrete, spraying herbicides, loading and unloading vehicles, moving materials and equipment, litter abatement, painting, street patching, and curb repair.
  • Operates motor-driven equipment and dump trucks on streets, highways, and over terrain; operates hand and portable tools
  • Cleans, maintains, and properly stores tools and equipment; performs minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment; cleans, maintains, and stores painting equipment.
  • Places traffic control devices and warning signs in accordance with MUTCD and monitors traffic flow.
  • Fabricates and installs street signs.
  • Cleans storm drains, drainage ditches, and culverts.
  • Uses chemicals and/or other supplies.
  • Provides and participates in emergency responses which, while not all inclusive, may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations, etc.

      Routinely operates the following light and medium power-driven equipment: aerial lift, air compressor, grinders, trucks, front loader, and skid steer.
  • Follows department policies and procedures;
  • Follows safety procedures and practices.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists other departments as the need arises;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: One year of Public Works construction and maintenance or similar experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment. Have completed training in Confined Space/Trench Safety/MUTCD/Equipment Maintenance-Operation Training for Operator In Training.

Education:  A high school diploma or GED is required. This employee must possess a valid Class B Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.) and have and maintain a good driving record.

Technical Skills:  A working knowledge of concrete work, equipment maintenance, signing procedures, work zone safety procedures, road construction techniques and repairs, and mathematics are required. This employee must be able to operate departmental equipment. The ability to judge distances, maintain equipment, and to read and interpret oral and written instructions, manuals, diagrams, and schematics is required. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, effective public relation, oral and written communication skills.

Problem Solving: Limited problem solving is involved in this position. This employee encounters problems with equipment malfunctions and adverse weather.

Decision Making: Limited decision-making is involved in this position. This employee makes decisions about performing necessary street repairs, maintaining department equipment, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.

Supervision:  This employee works with frequent supervision from the Street Superintendent and Crew Leader. This employee does not exercise any supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment. This employee does not participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations:  Daily contact with co-workers, supervisory personnel and the general public are expected.

Working Conditions: Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens, heavy machinery, excessive noise, work in confined spaces, heights, and all types of weather conditions is expected. Exposure to cuts and potentially infectious materials can be expected. Incumbents must be willing to work mandatory overtime when required; may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as required in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements: Manual labor including lifting and carrying objects and equipment, bending, stooping, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and the ability to operate departmental equipment is required in this position.
