POSITION SUMMARY                                                                                                                                 

Under the supervision of the Finance Director, the Finance Intern is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive experience in public finance, budgeting, and policy development within a municipal government setting. This position contributes to the financial and administrative functions of the City. This position should be detail-oriented, function with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism, and possess strong accounting and analytical skills, as well as effective public relations, communication, and organizational skills. The Finance Intern is limited to no more than 1000 hours in a year and is not eligible for KPERS Retirement Benefits or other city benefits.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

·         Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial data analysis to support the City's financial planning processes.

·         Create, analyze, and refine financial reports as directed by the Assistant Finance Director and Finance Director.

·         Assist in the timely presentation and submission of internal financial management information reports.

·         Support the Finance Transaction Team by providing general administrative assistance and processing payments and receivables-related business transactions.

·         Assist with various accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, and payroll transactions.

·         Accurately process sensitive financial data, working with internal users to provide and obtain necessary information.

·         Provide administrative support for various financial processes, assisting in the efficient operation of the department.

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

·         Assists in the Administrative Support Pool.

·         Fields questions, concerns, and complaints from the general public.

·         Learns and performs back-up functions for administrative duties as assigned.

·         Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

FINANCE APPRENTICE

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: Previous experience in a finance or accounting role (internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer work) and a basic understanding of governmental accounting principles is preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months to one year of employment.

Education:  High school diploma or GED required. Some college coursework in accounting, finance, business administration, or public policy strongly preferred.

Technical Skills:  Strong interest in public finance, accounting, and policy development required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and basic knowledge of accounting software are essential. The ability to follow department policies and procedures, to concentrate on tasks in the presence of distractions, to prepare reports, to type with speed and accuracy, and to interpret written instructions, proposals, reports, and financial statements is required. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with a focus on clarity and detail. Ability to conduct research, analyze data, and draft concise policy documents. High level of accuracy and attention to detail. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Supervision:  This employee works under the supervision of the Finance Director. This employee does not exercise supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability: This employee has some participation in the annual budget and audit process.

Personal Relations:  Daily contact with co-workers and supervisory personnel, and occasional contact with the organization’s governing body is expected.

Working Conditions: No adverse working conditions exist within this position. Working in an office setting with a computer is the primary aspect of this position.

Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a typical office environment with regular use of computers and other standard office equipment. Occasional lifting of items weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
