Job Summary

Responsible for generating work orders, maintaining historical records, laboratory analysis and coordinating the day-to-day operations of the Wastewater Treatment Plant for the City of McPherson


Job Competencies and Essential Job Functions

·         Generates data to assess process performance to be able to maintain biological treatment

·         Tracks equipment, parts, and material inventories

·         Oversees work order generation and ensures tasks are carried out

·         Performs preventive, corrective, and emergency repairs on equipment

·         Supervises and trains Plant Operators as needed

·         Assumes responsibility for the Wastewater Treatment Plant in the absence of the Superintendent/Chief Operator

·         Responds to emergency situations at the treatment plant and lift stations

·         Works in confined space operations and performs equipment inspections

·         Develops written operating and maintenance procedures for lab, maintenance, and processes

·         Generates Monthly Discharge Monitoring Reports for submittal to KDHE

·         Compiles and submits annual biosolids report to KDHE/EPA

·         Serves as Laboratory Director for WWTF laboratory

·         Serves as Quality Assurance Officer for WWTF laboratory

·         Assists with grease management program administration and filed work including facility inspections

·         Develops performance and data records

·         Performs research and prepares cost comparison analysis for new projects

·         Performs plant operator’s duties

·         Assists with industrial pretreatment administration and field work including facility inspections

·         Works weekend rotations and after hours on-call as needed

·         Selects, supervises, directs, and evaluates staff

·         Handles employee concerns, disciplinary actions, and performance evaluations

·         Enforces compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

·         Performs other duties as assigned

·         Complies with all organizational and departmental policies

·         Operates required equipment/tools

·         Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information (oral, written, or electronic)

·         Consistent and reliable attendance is required; employees must report to work regularly, on time, and in accordance with their assigned schedule

Position Requirements and Qualifications

Education / Experience requirements:

·         High school diploma or equivalent

·         Three years of similar or related experience

Licenses / Certifications:

·         Kansas Class IV Wastewater Operator Certification

·         Valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and maintain a good driving record

·         KWEA Class I Laboratory Analyst Certification or higher

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·         Knowledge of federal, state and local laws regulation concerning wastewater, wastewater department techniques, laboratory procedures, collection systems and maintenance procedures

·         Ability to interpret data, prepare reports and interpret written instructions, manuals, blueprints, electrical diagrams and other

·         Strong time management and prioritization

·         Independent work capability

·         Quick decision-making and sound judgment

·         Strong communication and problem-solving skills

·         Proficiency in math, spelling, computer use, and calculators
