Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager or Engineer Aide II, Engineer I performs as a part of the survey crew. The Aide must have the ability to work in the field as well as the office, and to complete manual labor tasks as well as computer tasks. The Aide must have knowledge and understanding of legal descriptions. The Aide must have the desire to learn survey techniques, drafting, and computer programs.

EducationExperience: Two (2) years of experience in surveying field and/or Engineering.: Must have high school diploma or equivalent.

Technical Skills: Ability to learn computer programs and to read maps.

Problem Solving Skills: Must utilize all elements; human, mechanical physical and fiscal to accomplish the best results. Must be resourceful in locating all elements of information.

Decision Making Skills:  Capable of assuming responsibilities and decision making in the absence of Manager.

Supervisory Skills:  No supervisory skills required.

Planning, Scheduling and Accountability: Suggest work, equipment, or supplies needed in the future for budgeting purposes.

Human Relations Skills: Ability to communicate courteously and responsibly to the public, the State, and other agencies as required.

Attention to Working Conditions: Must plan ahead to ensure the welfare and safety of the crew is achieved. All work should be done to the best ability to make a safe and accident free job site for the crews, as well as the public.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically strong enough to participate in day-to-day activities of department. Must be physically prepared to spend much time outdoors regardless of weather. Must have a valid Kansas Driver’s License.

Dress: The department Director will determine the appropriate dress for staff. The Manager and Foreman will help enforce the dress code.

 

Essential Functions:

The Engineering Aide should, without immediate supervision:

  • Research Courthouse as well as Engineering Department material for information to complete surveys, as assigned by the Engineering Manager.
  • See that all equipment required for survey completion is available and in proper working condition.
  • See that all traffic safety devices are being used at the survey site.
  • Collect sufficient field data to complete a set of plans.
  • Reduce field data to Plan and Profile sheets and/or Cross Sections by hand or on the computer.
  • Be able to put design on to the existing plans from the Engineering Manager’s preliminary design. (Math skills capable of figuring grades, curves, culvert sizing, and traversing.)
  • Help Township officials, surveyors, and the public with Right-of-Way information, section corner ties, bench marks, and surveys on file.
  • Be aware of current trends in both the survey field and computer as related to surveying and design.

 

Public Relations: The Foreman is responsible for training and monitoring staff with respect to their contact with the general public. All staff members are public servants and should conduct themselves as such. This does not imply that we much accept abuse, verbal or physical from the public or staff.

Marginal Functions: •Assist other departments as needed. •Cross-train personnel with other departments.
