Summary
This position is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of prisoners in a Direct Supervision and Linear style jail setting. This position is under the general supervision of a Jail Sergeant.

Definition and Examples of Work

  • Complete jail operations while ensuring the safety and security of employees and inmates
  • Distribute and collect meals, medication, clothing, personal care items, commissary, cleaning supplies, clothing, bedding, and personal items to prisoners
  • Maintain jail security by completing cell checks, random prisoner counts, monitoring cell areas on surveillance equipment, cell inspections, completing lock down procedures, and using physical force, restraints, and other equipment when necessary.
  • Clean and maintain all jail areas.
  • Properly orientate new prisoners to the jail and escort authorized personnel within the facility as need.
  • Prepare prisoners for transfer and provide security escort during transfer.
  • Testify in court when required.
  • Call jail nurse or emergency medical personnel when medical emergency arises with inmate.

  • Complete record keeping functions
  • Properly record and complete prisoner booking and release procedures,
  • Properly access, input and retrieve information from a computer to complete required reports and update records.
  • Maintains accurate records including daily records, log sheets, and logbooks.
Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

Latitude and Impact of Position

  • This position works independently and as part of a team to complete jail operations safely and securely.
  • The employee is expected to seek input from their immediate supervisor to develop deadlines, keep informed of progress, receive additional instruction for unfamiliar tasks, and to and refer unfamiliar situations.
  • This position is responsible for various work tasks that the supervisor will assign to the position along with direction, requirements, limitations, deadlines, overall objectives, and resources, and expected quantity/quality; amount of direction increases based on the difficulty, unusualness of assignment, or lack of clear precedents.
  • The supervisor will also provide administrative direction in terms of broadly defined missions and functions.
  • This position will determine methods of completion and coordination with others and is responsible for carrying out reoccurring assignments and successive steps independently; the position may have to interpret policy to complete duties.
  • Resulting work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance, overall feasibility, compatibility with other work, and effectiveness in meeting requirement or expectations; methods used in arriving at end results are usually not reviewed in detail although review of work increases with difficulty of assignments.
  • Employees often follow simple rules and detailed instructions but may need to analyze the intent of policy moderately or extensively, use judgement to select from different procedures, and use innovation when deviating from traditional methods; Deviations are referred to the supervisor.
  • Decision making often requires discriminating between choices of learned things but may also require analysis and interpretation of the circumstances, issues of the assignment, and methodology.

  • This position may be involved in communications where the purpose is to influence, motivate, interrogate, justify to, defend, negotiate with, or control persons/groups who may be fearful, skeptical, uncooperative, or dangerous and issues of considerable consequence.
  • This position has the responsibility for recording transactions, and handling/processing cash. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Bi-lingual preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and/or related software.
  • Proficient understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
  • Ability to learn and use different software including JMS, RMS, Livescan, Keefe Banking, Homwav and others
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine a proper course of action to be taken consistent with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete physical inspections of prisoner areas and jail facilities.
  • Ability to cope with situations firmly, fairly, consistently and with respect for the rights of others.
  • Ability to monitor activity in jail with audio-visual equipment.
  • Ability to operate office, laundry, and cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of disciplinary action procedure and chain of command.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge of booking process.
Required Education and Experience
  • High school education or G.E.D
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associate degree from an accredited two-year college in a related field or
  • One-year relative experience
Certification, License, Registration
  • Valid driver’s license
  • CPR and First Aid certifications upon hire
  • defensive driving upon hire
  • OC certification upon hire
  • Security awareness training upon hire
Other Requirements
  • Weekends and holiday shift availability
  • Subject to rotating shifts
  • Subject to call-out shifts.
