Sumner County has an opening in Youth Services for a Juvenile Intake Officer. The Juvenile Intake Officer completes assessments that help determine what community-based services may be appropriate for the youth and families that are arrested or placed in police protective custody. The employee in this position completes an assessment, evaluates the needs of individual clients, provides guidance and resources for the youth’s personal development, and provides a recommendation for action to the Community Corrections Director, County Attorney and/or DCF. The employee will be required to complete documentation and follow the standards of Sumner County Community Corrections Juvenile Service. This is a part-time position that will require one to work after hour’s on-call and a minimum of one weekend a month of on call.
Experience in probation, parole, social casework or counseling or related work with juvenile offenders/children in need of care or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is wanted but is not required.
Rate of Pay is starting at $30 for every 8 hours on call shift, and $15 an hour when you get called out to answer an intake.

Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Community Corrections Director the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Officer (JIO) position is responsible to respond to all law enforcement requests pertaining to children in need of care (CINC) and juvenile offenders (JO) who have been taken into custody and provide referral and placement of children in police protective custody. Work is subject to review by the Director. This position is funded from a grant through the Juvenile Justice Authority and employment is subject to full grant approval. The employee in this position is required to have reliable transportation and a valid Kansas Driver’s License.
Essential Functions
- Conduct interviews and gather information from involved parties using screening and assessment instruments;
- Referral and placement of children in police protective custody;
- Observe drug testing;
- Emergency crisis/de-escalation counseling at time of intake for children and families;
- Explain and interpret regulations and laws for children and families concerning situations affecting the children;
- Provide written reports to appropriate authorities;
- Mandated abuse reporting;
- Provide recommendations and referrals concerning interventions programs.
Marginal Functions
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned;
- Attends training seminars and classes as required by the Director;
- May be required to cross train in other suitable County departments.
Juvenile Intake and Assessment Officer (JIO)
Position Requirements
Experience: Experience is social casework preferred. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Training or experience in related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills as approved by the Director of Community Corrections. Valid State of Kansas Driver’s License and be insurable. Knowledge of investigative and interviewing techniques. Knowledge of the geography of the City and County preferred. Skills in the use of a personal computer and related software. Knowledge of State laws and procedures that pertain to the department and the ability to interpret social laws. Ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relationship with others. Annually complete twenty (20) hours of continuing education to develop and enhance knowledge of psychological and sociological factors influencing human behavior.
Technical Skills: Knowledge of psychological and sociological factors influencing human behavior. Knowledge of investigative and interviewing techniques. Ability to meet and deal tactfully with juveniles and the general public and to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing; the ability to access, input and retrieve information from the computer. Strong analytical, documentation and organizational skills. Proficiency in using computer software applications to include word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
Problem Solving: Extensive problem solving exists in this position. Typical problems involve determining the most appropriate response to youth in a crisis situation.
Decision-Making: Extensive decision making required. Typical decisions involving analyzing and determining the most appropriate placement and resources that will best address the needs of a particular youth that is in protective custody.
Supervision: Work performance reviewed by the Director. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.
Financial Accountability: Employee does not handle or record any type of monetary transactions in the performance of duties.
Personal Relations: Contact with personnel in the various agencies in areas of law enforcement, mental health, social rehabilitation and areas of the criminal justice system and with the general public.
Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions may exist relating to the interaction when dealing with juveniles and their families. Dangerous situations may occasionally arise in the course of dealing with juvenile offenders and their families. Adverse weather conditions may be a factor in traveling to location of intake. Working hours are set up as an on-call 24/7 basis with a rotating schedule.
Physical Requirements: To perform the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and/or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hand to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Ability to stand; walk; climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch and drive a car. Ability to lift and/or move a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
