ANIMAL SHELTER FACILITY COORDINATOR

This position promotes services and programs of the Animal Shelter. General duties include directing the day to day care of the animals. Keeping the facilities and all equipment in good repair and help establish good management practices, and works with Animal Shelter supervisor and staff. Subject to general supervision by the Shelter Manager.

 

  • Assists Manager in the development and monitoring of the annual budget.
  • When necessary help develop policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation of the Animal Shelter.
  • Works directly with the care of the Animals.
  • Plans and implements a public education program, including the preparation and distribution of literature to local organizations regarding animal control laws and ordinances and pet care;
  • Monitors the collection of fees, fines and charges received from pet owners and veterinarians to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting procedures;
  • Receives and responds to citizen complaints and requests for information regarding Animal Control Services; provides information to the media regarding Animal Control Services operations;
  • Monitors and recommends rabies control programs.
  • Determines the final disposition of animals;
  • Assists in the euthanasia of animals identified by veterinarians and management with understanding and compassion for the animal;
  • With Shelter Manager maintains cooperative relations with Federal, State, City and private agencies concerned with the care and control of animals;
  • Reviews and explains animal services procedures and activities to affected City departments to ensure compliance;
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Capture, handling, feeding, and general care of domestic animals.
  • Be familiar and obid by the laws, ordinances, and procedures governing animal services operations with various species of domestic animals.
  • Basic laws, ordinances, and regulations underlying the municipal corporation.

Ability to:

  • Education staff on policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation of the Animal Services facility.
  • Analyze a variety of administrative, operational, fiscal and social problems and make sound recommendations as to their solution, and prepare working procedures.
  • Develop rabies control programs;
  • Develop educational programs for pet owners.
  • Monitor the collection of monies and issuance of receipts.
  • Carry out brief, general instructions of a superior, effectively and with dispatch.
  • Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public in face-to-face, one-on-one settings, in group settings, and using a telephone.
  • Produce written documents in the English language with clearly- organized thoughts with proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Comprehend and make inferences from written material in the English language.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

Working Conditions:

·      Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.

·      Travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.

·      Lift and/or carry animals weighing between 20 and 100 lbs.

·      Physically able to operate a motor vehicle and operate a variety of weapons.

·      Office Environment; exposure to computer screens.

·      Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).

·      Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).

·      Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.

·      Lift arms above shoulder level.

·      Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized by the City designated physician to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • Must possess Kansas Certification of Training for Animal Euthanasia within six (6) months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position.
  • Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Bachelor’s degree plus four (4) years of experience, two (2) years of which were supervisory. Supervisory experience in the animal control field may be substituted for the academic requirements on a year-for year basis. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
