Position Summary

 

Under the supervision of the Health Department Director and/or Public Health Supervisor, the WIC Dietitian position involves the provision and coordination of nutrition services for the local WIC program.  The responsibilities of this position include interpreting and disseminating current scientific information regarding food, nutrition, diet and health to professionals working within the department and the public. The WIC Dietitian functions as the Nutrition Services Coordinator for the WIC program. The employee in this position must be a current LD or RD; pass criminal background check and drug screen; and possess a valid Kansas Driver’s License.

 

 

Essential Functions

  • Writes and directs implementation of the Nutrition Services Plan for the department with input from all WIC staff;

  • Completes needs assessment to determine the nature and extent of nutrition needs and problems of target population;

  • Coordinates and assures the provision and quality of direct nutrition services;

  • Provide nutrition counseling to high-risk clients and develop/update nutrition care plans;

  • Assists in promoting breastfeeding in the clinic and community;

  • Coordinates WIC nutrition services including referrals with other health department and community programs based on client need and nutrition education activities with clients;

  • Facilitates integration of WIC nutrition services with other nutrition and breastfeeding support services provided to clients;

  • Coordinates nutrition education activities with benefit issuance and computer-assisted nutrition education by clients.

  • Provides and coordinates in-service training, technical assistance and orientation of clinic staff to nutrition services.

  • Abides by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) including the signing of a confidentiality agreement;

  • Will use and disclose no more that the minimum amount of Protected Health Information (PHI) necessary and reasonable in performance of job duties as defined by HIPAA, state law and\or departmental policy whichever is stricter;

  • Will have access to the following PHI: patient/client demographic information, scheduling information, billing information, diagnosis/procedure information, reports/medical reports.

     

     

    Marginal Functions

  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the Director;

  • Limited understanding of Incident Command Systems;

  • Attends training seminars and classes as required by Director.

Position Requirements

 

Experience:    One year of experience as a licensed dietician preferred.

 

Education:    Dietetic licensure (LD) by the state of Kansas. RD by the commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association Preferred. CBE, CLE, CLC or other equivalent also preferred. WIC training completed within WIC Policy timeframes after employment (or contracting, if applicable).  

 

Technical Skills:  Broad knowledge of the theoretical and practical principles and practices of nutrition, dietetics, education and public health including health care ethics, case management, and care coordination. Advanced level of knowledge of current scientific information regarding maternal and child nutrition, diet and health. Specialized knowledge of the organization of health nutrition services in the community. Skill in conducting a community assessment and translating data into the nutrition services plan. Skill in presenting oral and written ideas in a clear and concise manner to health care professionals and the public. Experience in providing direct nutrition services to families, mothers and children.

 

Problem Solving: Frequent problem solving exists in relation to determining the best method/s for education of the target population about their nutritional needs and requirements.

 

Decision-Making:   Moderate decision making responsibilities exist when completing needs assessment to determine the nature and extent of nutrition needs and problems of the target population.

 

Supervision:    Work performance reviewed by the Director and/or Public Health Supervisor. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.

 

Financial Accountability:   Employee is responsible for the proper handling of any funds and/or valuable encountered during the performance of their work. Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of department and does not participate in the annual departmental budgetary process.

 

Personal Relations: Daily contact with other employees, patients and the general public. Frequent interaction with children under the age of 5.

 

Working Conditions:  Work hours are generally between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Adverse working conditions generally do not exist in this position.

 

Physical Requirements:  To perform the duties of this job the employee must have fine and gross manual dexterity. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision and depth perception. Must have the ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must have the ability to walk, bend, stop, keel and climb stairs. Between 2% - 5% of the time requires physical exertion to manually move, lift carry or push heavy objects of up to 50 lbs. independently and over 50 lbs. with assistance.
