Position Summary 

Under the supervision of electric production supervisor and department head, the position is in training for the responsibility of operation, maintenance, and monitoring of gas and steam turbines, turbine generators, high pressure boiler, air compressors, pumps, and associated support equipment. The nature of this position requires occasional training and/or scheduled hours on all shifts of power plant operation.

Essential Functions

?       Synchronizes and parallels turbine generators;

?       Operates and monitors gas and steam turbines, high pressure boiler, and diesel generators;

?       Checks operation of all plant equipment;

?       Reads gauges and meters, checks pumps, lubricant levels, and performs related tasks;

?       Notifies supervisor of unusual situations or conditions;

?       Makes daily inspection of all operating equipment;

?       Makes daily, monthly, and annual inspections as required;

?       Ability to use tools and equipment safely in performing maintenance on heavy equipment and associated mechanical and electric equipment.

Marginal Functions

?       Assist with computer operation or maintenance

?       Assist with welding, painting, carpentry, electrical, or associated construction trades;

?       Performs other related duties as required.

Position Requirements 

Experience: Experience preferred in a power plant or related field or equivalent experience i.e. boiler tech, machinist, etc. but not mandatory. Candidate would be expected to function as Electric Production Operator 1 within 6 months to 1 year of employment. 

Education/Licenses:  Graduation from high school. Specialized training in field related to power plant operation desirable.

Technical Skills: Some knowledge of high pressure boilers, turbines, generators, and associated equipment. Some knowledge of maintenance methods and tools used. Able to read meters and gauges accurately. Able to follow moderately complex instructions. Must possess a valid Driver’s license.

Problem Solving: Able to see cause and effect when monitoring equipment. Able to make judgements in tense situations when time is critical to minimize equipment damage or potential safety concerns.

Decision-Making: Most decisions will follow guidelines set by supervision except in an emergency situation.

Supervision: Direct supervision given by production supervisor or department head. Not responsible for supervising others.

Financial Accountability: Not responsible for cash receipts or budgetary matters.

Personal Relations: Extensive phone contact with the public. Must be able to demonstrate ability to tactfully handle difficult people.

Working Conditions: Some exposure to adverse weather conditions. Some work in confined areas and high heat areas. In possible contact with high pressure steam vessels and lines, electrical equipment, etc. High level of noise during run season.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to climb stairs, as many as two or three flights at a time, and ladders. Able to work in hot uncomfortable conditions. Able to work in high noise areas. Able to work in confined space areas, Able to move heavy objects safely. Able to work under stressful conditions of power plant operations, e.g. Situations during storms when weather related problems cause electrical faults on high voltage distribution systems and cause alarms to sound, lights to blink or go out, power plant equipment limits to be stretched and electrical circuits from the entire distribution gird to trip off.
